Note: Yes there are 2 “Day 12″s because I can’t count. 🙂 Noticed today and corrected.
Yesterday was my last day at work until Feb 21 and is my 2nd day packing. Oh my, this is starting to get real now!
Over the weekend, when my head was clear and I had a few days to ponder gaps, I put together a packing list. It has divisions for swim, bike, run, nutrion, misc, clothes and includes a level of detail that is (almost) silly.
Last night as I started gathering things together, life was pretty simple: just grab stuff, put it in the big pile and check it off the master list.
Today I roke the bike in the morning, had a chiro appointment at 10, then a few errands to do and an hour in the pool in the afternoon. Then home to break down the bike, sort the pile into actual luggage and pack the few last remaining things that need to go.
I’m going to wish I had a sherpa to carry all this stuff: bike box, wheel safe, big tool box for gear, suitcase (probably, though not sure yet) and carry-on bag with stuff that guarantees I could finish training, taper and race if everything else went AWOL (swim gear, bike shoes, running shoes, Garmin 910xt, etc.). In fact, I’m generally packing defensively.
I’m assuming that *something* isn’t going to make it to the far end with everything else. I’ll, of course, be super happy when it does, but I’m planning for things to arrive after I do.
The bike box has the complete bike, pump, race helmet and some misc (bike specific) gear in with it. If it doesn’t show, I’ll still have a training helmet and my shoes and riding clothes with me, so, in a horror-story plotline, I could rent a bike in Panama to race on (oh my God I hope this doesn’t happen – it won’t! it won’t!)
The wheel box has extra higher performance wheels in it than those packed with the bike. Nice to have, but not a deal-breaker.
The gear box has extra electronics, more clothes, racing flats, nutrition, toiletries, transition bag and mat, TRX system, etc. in it. If it doesn’t show up for a few days I may be washing my clothes daily or smell pretty rank, but I’ll still be training.
Like I said, hopefully me and all my kit arrives in Panama all at the same time, but with a little forethought I can make staggered arrival manageable if not idea.
